One of the co-founders of WhatsApp & Whatsapp Apk Jan Koum used to work at Yahoo as an engineer. He met a colleague Brian Acton who later became a business partner in later future. They both worked at Yahoo for about nine years together and then applied for Facebook, but luck did not favour them.
The two fellow colleagues bought an iPhone in 2008 and the app store caught their attention. They thought that the apps market is quite good and that there are high chances for their growth. They decided to work an app and it turned out to be today’s most popular app, ‘WhatsApp’. They started working on the beta version of the app for iPhone. The app got released into the app market in 2009 and was an instant hit.
Koum chooses the name ‘WhatsApp’ a resemblance to the word ‘Whats’ up’. After testing the beta version of the app for few months, Koum got waxed with it and when he is about to give up Acton boosted him up. They both worked on improving the beta version and finally launched the app in November 2009 on Apple App Store.
The app was developed in Russia without the need of investment from outside. At first, WhatsApp charged from its users on the usage of its services on iPhone, and later a yearly subscription when the app got launched for Google Play Store.
When Facebook is looking to expand its connected world, its eyes landed on WhatsApp. It owned the app for 19 Billion USD, which is considered as one of the biggest deal in the industry.
At present, WhatsApp is the number one instant messaging app in the market with outstanding features and services. It emerged as a top player in the instant messaging world with its great and grand services and is still in the race competing for neck-to-neck with its rivals.
